HUNDREDS of homes could be built on the Tetrosyl site in Walmersley after plans were submitted to Bury Council.

The application to build 268 houses on Bevis Green Works, off Walmersley Old Road, were lodged with planning officers earlier in the week.

Barratt Homes hope to build a range of properties, including two bed mews houses, three bed townhouses, three and four bed semi-detached and detached properties and two bedroom apartments.

A spokesman for the developer said discussions to buy the site from Tetrosyl are at “an advanced stage”.

The site, which is situated to the west of the M66, currently houses a number of Victorian mill buildings, all of which would be demolished to make way for the homes.

However, North Manor councillor James Daly said he had ‘real concerns’ about the impact the development would have on the surrounding area.

He added: “Walmersley Old Road and the local highway network will not cope with the hundreds of extra vehicles this site will produce.

“Where will the extra school places needed come from and the other amenities needed to support such large scale development? How can it be justified that there is such a small number of affordable homes as part of the plans?

“Whilst I support building new homes on brownfield sites, such development should be sustainable and not unduly and negatively impact on the community in which it sits.

“I urge all residents to take part in the consultation to register their views.”

At a public meeting held last March, Barratt Homes told residents the proposed estate would have ‘no material impact’ on the area’s roads.

It came after residents raised their concerns about a lack of infrastructure and the impact the development would have on the environment.

Some said they were also worried about the availability of school places nearby.

The council granted outline planning permission for homes on the site back in 2012.

The site was previously used as Tetrosyl’s headquarters until the car care manufacturer relocated it to Rochdale town centre several years ago.

A spokesperson from Barratt Homes Manchester, said: “Tetrosyl currently owns the site on Walmersley Old Road and discussions are at an advanced stage to acquire the site from them. The sale of the site will support investment in new manufacturing facilities within the borough.”
