A LONG-RUNNING annual village event could be revived after a six-year hiatus thanks to a renewed sense of community spirit.

The popular Ainsworth Village Day has not taken place for some six years.

However, following fresh interest within the community, a new committee of eight people has been formed.

Cllr Jamie Walker, who represents Radcliffe North, and is a member of the committee, said: "Ainsworth Village Day has been talked about for the past couple of years. It was a really good event that brought people together.

"Now a few volunteers, some of whom are part of the Home Watch group, have decided to band together to revive it. We are looking to bring it back. People are really excited about it. This is something that people have wanted for a long time.

"The committee is looking for an expression of interest from anyone who would like to be involved."

The traditional event at Ainsworth Recreation Ground, was first held in 1979, with attractions including a coconut shy and fairground.

In later years the event featured hog roasts, quad bikes, dancing and children's fancy dress.

Between 1998 and 2001, there was another three-year pause in the running of the celebration due to a shortage of volunteers.

In 2001, Les Martin was the driving force behind the event and managed to re-energise the community.

He established a Village Day Volunteer Task Force, which attracted more than 20 members.

However, two years later the event ground to a halt again. The last event was held on July 30, 2013.

Plans are now under way to resurrect Ainsworth Village Day on the green in Church Street, in front of the Duke Williams Inn, in July this year.

A date is yet to be set. More information will follow in due course.

Traditionally, profits were given to Christ Church Ainsworth School, Ainsworth Scholars Play Group and a fund for local good causes.

This year, it is expected that the funds will go towards Christ Church Ainsworth's building fund and towards putting on the event again next year and in future years.
