A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a missing woman.

Susan Waring, 45, was last seen on Wednesday, January 16, at her doctor's surgery on James Street West in Darwen.

Ms Waring, from the town, was initially thought to have been seen last on Blackburn Road, Darwen, leaving an address at 10pm on January 30.

Police are searching a property in Blackburn Road, Darwen.

A police spokesman said: "Detectives are piecing together her subsequent movements.

"No one has seen or heard from Susan for weeks which is very unusual.

"She is often in touch with her sister, and is an active Facebook user but has not logged on since towards the end of January.

"If you know anything about her disappearance, you think you may have seen her either in the days leading up to her going missing or after January 16, we need to speak to you as soon as possible as you may have vital information.

"Similarly, if you know anything at all you think could help, please let us know."

There had been previous reported sightings of Ms Waring in Dumbarton, Scotland, however, detectives have been able to rule them out and do not believe them to be her.

A 46-year-old man, from Darwen has been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

A police spokesman said Ms Waring's family have been informed of the arrest and are being supported by family liaison officers.

The spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with them at this incredibly sad and difficult time."

One Snape Street resident said: "It's tragic the police are now treating this as murder.

"I'm horrified to hear things haven't gone down a positive road.

"The police came to my house last week asking if we knew her - but we didn't.

"I really feel for her family."

Another resident said: "I've just come home home from work and seen the police officers in the white CSI suits.

"It's horrible to think what has happened. It's really upsetting and distressing."

Ms Waring was the victim of an attempted murder in August 2017 after she was blockaded in her home in Dumbarton.

She was in a coma for nine days after the blaze.

In court she said she had no recollection of the incident.
