THE red carpet will be rolled out for young filmmakers at a special premiere taking place at Bolton's Light Cinema tomorrow.

They may only be at primary school, but children in Bury are following in the footsteps of renowned broadcaster David Attenborough by creating documentaries designed to change the world.

Tottington Primary School children will have their work featured in the first LitFilmFestival to be held in Bolton.

The film highlights the importance of using sustainable methods to harvest palm oil.

They drew on their digital and literacy skills to create the short thought-provoking films.

Teacher Simon Hunt said: "I'm excited about our very first Bolton/Bury LitFilmFest, it’s the first of its kind in the area. The festival is an event where local primary schools get to showcase their work on a cinema screen! Over the past few weeks, the schools involved have been writing, filming and editing their videos, ready for the festival. The videos created are based around current issues like Palm oil, plastic pollution in the oceans and parliamentary issues.

Through the medium of film, children are able to hone their digital literacy skills while working on projects with a real purpose. Best of all, children get to see themselves on the big screen- Hollywood comes to Bolton!"

Children worked with Chester Zoo, with Chester named as the first Sustainable Palm Oil city, as part of their research, which including quizzing employees over Skype.

And as part of the film, the children wrote their own poem which is read out at the end of the film which will get its first screening on Friday at the Light Cinema.

Mr Hunt said: "The LitFilmFestival uses what children are interested in, such as Youtube, to develop their skills.

"In this children are writing for a purpose, it brings their work to life.

"The poem children have written is amazing and the confidence of some children has increased so much by taking part in something like this, some who would not normally volunteer have."

Children at Tottington Primary School have created a Newsround style report on palm oil and the risks it poses if not farmed in a sustainable fashion.

Since taking part in the project, children have also adopted an orangutan.

LitFilmFest states: "Our plan is simple: change the world one classroom at a time!"
