A NEW homeless kitchen has opened in Bury.

Beat The Street is a volunteer-led project working to feed the borough’s homeless and vulnerable people every Friday night.

Based at the former PC World store at the Angouleme Retail Park, the group held their highly successful inaugural kitchen on March 15, serving hot meals, including desert, to around 12 people.

Beat The Street volunteers also handed out food parcels and provided hot and cold drinks, snacks and sweet treats.

The organisation has only been existence for a matter of weeks and was created by a group of people who have all previously worked in supporting the homeless in Bury.

The group noticed that there was no provision to feed and help the borough’s homeless on a Friday and set to work to remedy the deficiency.

Utilising their strengths the volunteers quickly brought Beat The Street to life with each member responsible for getting the kitchen street ready, from providing tables and tableware to communications and promoting the kitchen.

In future Beat the Street hopes to expand to provide food on more nights of the week, based on demand.

It is also in discussion with several companies to set up food donation boxes for their food parcels, and numerous firms — including Asda, Haribo and Warburtons — have pledged to help supply the group with items.

Tracey Kean, a Beat The Street volunteer, said: “The first night was really good and a very promising start. If we can start like this and keep the momentum going then hopefully we can add other days.”
