THIS week’s delve into the picture archives at The Bolton News has unearthed this photograph of youngsters completing a tough Football Association Super Skills course in August 1983.

The information accompanying the picture says the four-day course took place at Horwich Leisure Centre and involved two days of coaching followed by a two-day tournament.

All 35 youngsters received certificates from Patrick Lippmann, manager of the Horwich branch of sponsors, the West Bromwich Building Society, who is pictured.

Do you remember the course or recognise anyone pictured?

THE second photograph is of the two teams who competed in the Bolton Evening News Centenary Trophy final 30 years ago and was published on May 2.

Reader John Ryan emailed in and said: "I was delighted to see a picture of myself and the Tonge Moor lads in the paper, although perhaps not as keen to acknowledge that it was 30 years ago.

"We had a great little side under the management of the Tonge Moor legend, Billy Poole, who's many eccentricities are still talked about today. I hope he has seen the picture.

"We won the Withins Feeder School trophy and the Burnden Trophy, as well as something else that slips my mind, and finished runners-up to St Osmunds in the league.

"Primary school football was reported on every Saturday in the old 'Buff ' supplement and was competitive and keen, but Billy always instilled in us the right side of competition, in so much as respect for opponents and ourselves, the pride in representing the school and the area, and to go about our sport always giving our best and to shake hands after the game.

"I was lucky enough to score in every round that year and we were unfortunate not to win the game but Bolton School did well to get themselves the draw.

"We are in the light strips and pictured, back, from left, are: Dave Ince, me and Paul Rouke; middle, John MacDonald, Gareth Price, Paul Fletcher, Paul Walsh, Simon Entwistle and captain Chris Aldred; front, Andy Smith, Matt Aldred, Kris Derbyshire and Mark Worsley.

"The Bolton player next to the keeper is Andy Coleman, he and I played junior football for Eagley a few years later.

"The final was played at High Lawn, and Neil Midgeley, the World Cup and FA referee, kindly officiated. I was sad to learn he died a year or two after the game.

"I have the programme and a VHS tape of the game, as well as the semi-final, a local derby win against Moorgate.

"It seemed all of Tonge Moor turned out to roar us on that night.

"Unfortunately the rise of professional clubs' academies and harvesting of young players has killed primary school football as a competitive spectacle.

"A great shame, but superb memories and the lads now live and work all over the world.

"Superb stuff, I also have much less hair these days, no Rick Astley quiff anymore! Thanks for printing."

Matthew Aldred added: "I was playing in that final. Me and my twin brother (captain in yellow holding the trophy) are in the photo playing for Tonge Moor. The good days."
