Celebration of poet

The Bolton News:

A CELEBRATION of Bolton’s links to the American poet Walt Whitman continues on Friday.

A series of events have taken place this month to celebrate the link, which stretches back to 1885, when James W Wallace, a working-class man from Bolton, set up the Eagle Street ‘College’, a book group that celebrated Whitman’s poetry.

Attracting a small group of like-minded men, Wallace and his followers wrote to Whitman, who to their amazement wrote back. This correspondence led to two group members visiting Whitman’s home in America. From 1.30pm on Friday, Dr Paul Salveson and Don Lee will deliver a free talk at Bolton Central Library on the history of the Eagle Street College. That evening, a new play about Wallace’s time in America with Whitman will be performed at Bolton Socialist Club from 7.30pm.
