SIR - Despite the confident prediction of every political commentator, The Brexit Party has failed to win the Peterborough by-election. In retrospect the reason is quite clear in that it was their misfortune for the contest to be held on the final day of the D-Day commemoration.

Our newspapers and television screens were filled with images of elderly men proudly displaying their medals and often with tears running down their cheeks remembering their fallen comrades. If pressed they would modestly describe their part in the Normandy landings and the battle which ultimate led to the liberation of Europe.

At the same time Nigel Farage, Jacob Rees-Mogg and others have been continuously promoting the idea that only Brexit can ensure that our sovereignty remains intact and that our country does not become a ‘vassal state.’ It is now apparent that the contrast between their empty rhetoric and the heroic self-sacrifice of those brave men and women some 75 years ago was sufficient to persuade enough voters to abstain or give their vote to another party.
