OUR recent news story on how Martin Barton built an 8ft model of the Titanic in his front room reminded us of the wealth of model-making talent in Bolton over the years.

From a tribute to the Royal Wedding by the Northern Branch of the British Model Soldier Society, to Alan Hardman, of St Helen's Road, who built The Victory, the Santa Maria and Swedish flagship The Wafa (and the Armada by the Bolton model boat club members), dedicated enthusiasts were happy to devote hours and hours to their hobby.

Harry Ewing, who turned professional at the age of 56, could count his model of the flight of canal locks at Nob End, Little Lever, and the Sir John Holden Mill amongst his many achievements.

While back in 1989, Jim Tattersall was happy to show his 9ft model of Wigan Pier, which was heading for Chelsea Flower Show.

Besides fascinating with the level of detail, some models created by Bolton's model-makers played an important part in remembering bygone times. Take Trevor Booth or instance.

His model of Great Moor Street Railway Station, which he displayed at Bolton Model Railway Club's 1993 show, brought back many fond memories for passengers who used the station before it was demolished in the early 1960s.
