AN appeal has been made for volunteers and food donations to help tackle child hunger across Bury.

FareShare, a food redistribution charity, has called on food suppliers and producers to donate healthy meals and snacks for children attending holiday clubs over the summer.

More than one third of children in Bury are growing up in poverty, FareShare says, of which many are eligible for free school meals. The charity has requested donations of fruit, snacks, wraps and low sugar juice as well as cereal bars, sandwiches, yoghurt and spreads.

The charity is also appealing for more volunteers during July and August to give up a minimum of four hours lending a hand at its warehouse in East Manchester.

Miranda Kaunang, Head of Development at FareShare Greater Manchester, said: “Without this access over summer, families face a period of increased struggle with children at risk of hunger, isolation and inactivity."
