CONSTRUCTION workers were left scrambling for safety after the roof of the home they were working on collapsed suddenly.

Roofers had been slating a single-storey extension to a property in Lakelands Drive, Ladybridge, when the structure caved in on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after it was initially feared that one of the builders may have been trapped in the collapse.

Ady Taylor, station manager at Bolton North fire station said: “There were two roofers on the roof at the time so that added a bit of weight on top of it.

“Thankfully they managed to get off before collapsed, so there were no injuries and no damage to any properties.”

The work was being carried out on a building adjoined to a bungalow.

After assessments of the situation had been made, Mr Taylor remained at the scene in an advisory capacity before handing over to officers from the national Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

A HSE spokesperson said: “HSE is aware of the incident and making initial enquiries.”

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service confirmed that an ambulance was sent to the scene.

However, no one was hospitalised or required treatment, they added.

A Bolton Council spokesman said that the incident was a matter for the HSE.

Signs were visible at the building site carrying the name of Glenn Slater Contractors Limited and the company has been approached for comment.
