A BY-ELECTION is being held for the Radcliffe West ward seat after the departure of former Bury Council leader Rishi Shori.

Mr Shori took up a non-political position at Birmingham City Council earlier this month.

The move prompted him to quit his position as leader of Bury Council and step down as a ward councillor.

Mr Shori was first elected as councillor for Radcliffe West in 2009 and went on to become the council's youngest leader when he was appointed in 2016.

Bury Council has now confirmed that a by-election for the seat was due to take place on August 29.

Anyone who wishes to stand as a candidate has until 4pm on Thursday, August 1 to submit their nomination forms.

Nomination papers can be collected from the elections office at Bury Town Hall.

Radcliffe West voters must be registered by Tuesday, August 13 in order to cast their ballot.

To register, email electionservices@bury.gov.uk or call 0161 253 5252.
