A RESURRECTED village event was hailed a success despite the rain.

From bake-off competitions to a tug of war, the Ainsworth Village Day brought residents of the surrounding areas together to celebrate community.

The event on Saturday was officially opened by the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Trevor Holt, accompanied by the Mayoress, his wife Evelyn.

Debbie Carling, one of the members of the committee, said: "The committee have worked long and hard over the last six months to resurrect the Village Day and so it was absolutely amazing to see the local community out in full force to support the event.

"Despite the terrible weather we had a footfall of more than 1,000 people attend, and lots of entries into our fun competitions.

"We are very grateful to each and every person who helped to make the day possible."

The much-anticipated barbecue still went ahead, with gazebos being set up outside The Duke William.

There was also a "fantastic turnout" for the fun dog show, where prizes were given to the most perfect pooches.

Organisers posted on the Ainsworth Village Day Facebook group: "Well the weather could have been kinder but it didn’t stop us having an AMAZING afternoon!

"Thanks to each and every person who helped to make this day possible! We couldn’t have done it without the support of our wonderful community!"

They added: "We will definitely be making this event bigger and better next year."

A small committee of people rallied round to ensure the event went ahead, following a six-year hiatus.

The village day featured various performances from local groups, including music from Electric Cheese, and showcases from Footlights and Helen's Angels.

A fire engine was also stationed at the event to increase awareness and give young people the chance to learn about the emergency services.

Dozens of local businesses and individuals also gave their support for the occasion, by donating raffle prizes, holding stalls, providing rosettes and sashes for the dog show and more.

A separate post reads: "Special thanks to those who went above and beyond to make the day happen and gave up their valuable time, equipment and experience for free. We are extremely grateful."
