PLANS for the future of a gym, once used by a British boxing champion, have been revealed.

The Robin Hood Inn, previously used as the Team Fury gym, could be converted into a cafe if the plans get the green light.

Former world title challenger and British heavyweight champion Hughie Fury trained at the premises in Halliwell Road last year ahead of his bid for the world heavyweight crown.

Son of legendary boxing coach Peter Fury and cousin to former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, Hughie and his team have since left the gym.

It was at the Bolton gym where Peter Fury trained Tyson for their historic victory over Wladimir Klitschko in Germany in November 2015.

The property, which has been vacant for some months now, is now set to be home to a new cafe.

Plans were submitted by landlord Sadiq Munshi last month.

The former pub, which has been closed for around a decade, was turned into a gym in 2014.

The applicant, Platinum Community Centre, was granted permission to change the use of the property to a community gym and training room in April.

It said: "This application is simply looking to satisfy the growing needs of the local youngsters to have a small compact local community facility to improve their fitness and lifestyle and direct them towards a positive future."

Planning officers said that the development would be beneficial to the area. By the summer, the Team Fury signs were displayed outside the premises.

They said: "The council has adopted policies seeking to encourage such facilities and recognises the important contribution made to the recreational and sporting provision and the health of young people."

Three years prior to that, the landlord was granted permission to convert the ground floor of the property to a restaurant and create a self-contained flat in the first floor.

The Bolton News understands that the cafe would be managed by the landlord if the plans are given the go ahead.

Town hall officers are due to decide the outcome of the application by the end of September.
