BURY South MP Ivan Lewis has urged the UK government to intervene in the crisis following India's 'catastrophic' revocation of the special status held by its section of Kashmir.

The mainly-Muslim territory was split between India and Pakistan at the 1947 independence to the sub-continent.

Kashmir has been a flashpoint of conflict between the two states ever since despite the Indian-administered section being given special status in Article 370 of the country's constitution.

Now the New Delhi government has announced that status will end in October.

Independent MP Mr Lewis has written to new Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab urging him to condemn the move.

Mr Lewis said: ""India’s catastrophic move to strip Kashmir of its special status will further aggregate tensions and civil unrest in the region which could lead to global consequences. It is our moral obligation to speak out and demand a peaceful resolution to the escalating situation."
