LITTLE Lever skipper Josh Gent believes his side are good enough to stay up and is targeting at least two wins from the last three games for Premiership survival.

The Victory Road side currently prop up the table after just two wins from 14 matches – albeit four of those have fallen victim to the wet weather.

On paper it looks like Gent’s men have struggled but he says luck with the weather and lack of consistent team selection early on in the campaign have played a part.

Despite their position, he knows having a full-strength side available gives them a chance of staying up.

And while they may be underdogs against title-chasing Farnworth tomorrow, the captain said the team is up for the away clash.

Gent told The Bolton News: “We know Farnworth are a good side and with games against them and Walkden in our next two, it is a test.

“But I know we can beat anyone with our full-strength side out and that’s what we have this weekend.

“The lads are all up for it and we know we just have to win, whether we play a team at the top or one at the bottom.

“It is down to four games now to stay up and I am still confident we will do it.

“Out of the last four we have to believe we can win two or three – that’s the objective.

“There are no ifs or buts – we have to.

“No one wants to be playing in the Association Division next year, we want to be in the top flight and feel we should be there.

“One team will be relegated, that has been confirmed by the league, and we don’t want it to be us.”

It remains tight at the basement end with Little Lever bottom on 21 points, one place above Adlington who have the same total.

Just above those two are Westhoughton, on 24 points, and they play Adlington this weekend.

It means a win for Little Lever at Farnworth could see them off the bottom with at least one of their nearest rivals dropping points.

Gent added: “A draw in that game would be the ideal result for us.

“If we win and Adlington win then Westhoughton would be right in it.

“To be fair we have to concentrate on us and not what other teams are doing. If we don’t do our jobs, we cannot blame anyone else.”

So what has gone wrong for the team this campaign?

“Inconsistent team selection at the start didn’t help,” said Gent. “For one reason or another we couldn’t get our regular team out each week.

“Then the postponements have played a part. We seem to get rained off against teams we feel we have a better chance of beating then have to play the likes of Horwich and Walkden.

“We won two against Farnworth Social Circle and Adlington out of three and then we were due to play Kearsley soon after who turned up with half a team and the rain came.

“It was the same against Westhoughton who have been struggling.

“Then against Lostock we lost by five runs but they went over their allotted bowling time which we felt should have seen them hit by penalty runs. We appealed but got nothing.

“So we have had bad luck as well as the fact we haven’t played that well in some games, whereas other teams above us who we feel we are better than have had that luck.

“We are down there for a reason, we accept that, but we have to stay up and then we can regroup.

“We have big plans for next season and need to be in the top division.

“There are renovations planned at the club and it is in a good place at the minute.

“The club is as strong as it’s been in 10 years and we have to make sure we stay up to back that up.”
