BURY South MP Ivan Lewis has called on the European Union to reopen negotiations on a Brextit deal for the UK.

He spoke out after Boris Johnson demanded the Irish backstop provision is dropped from any withdrawal agreement.

The Prime Minister was this week meeting met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron today after EU officials rejected any changes.

Independent MP Mr Lewis said: "I am very concerned about leaving the EU without a deal and I’m no cheerleader for Boris Johnson.

"It would be preposterous for the EU to refuse to reopen negotiations. I understand the strength of feeling of those who believe leaving with no deal is not in our national interest.

"It is in our national interest for politicians of all colours to speak with one voice and call on the EU to reopen negotiations."
