THIS week’s old picture was brought into The Bolton News by reader Michael Mainon and features a Bolton rugby league team from 1987.

However, there is no other information accompanying the old photograph.

Do you remember that team or recall any of the faces?

Did you play for the side or know how they fared that year?

Email david.pye@nqnw.co.uk with any recollections.

THE second picture is of the Adlington Cricket Club side from 1984 and was included in the sporting nostalgia section on July 26.

Chairman of Adlington CC, Nick Chamberlain, got in touch and said: "The players are, standing, from left, Ken Hitchen, Rod Charnock (w/k), Gary Connolly, Anthony Gill, Mick Moore, Mick Howard (professional); seated, Alan Harrison, David Cadman, Lawrence Moore (captain), Eddie Haddon, Mick Leyland and Darryl Hitchen (scorer).

"Adlington finished seventh in The Bolton and District Cricket Association in 1984 but won the Cross Cup that year and the following year.

"The photograph was taken at Adlington, the field behind the players now occupied by industrial units and the trees are a lot taller.

"The one notable feature of the team is that nine of the 11 are Adlington born and bred, the only exceptions being Alan Harrison and Mick Howard, from Blackrod and Leyland, so still local – how times have changed."

Meanwhile, scorer at the time, Darryl Hitchen, emailed: "This team won BDCA Cross Cup in 1984 beating Clifton the final at Roe Green, and then subsequently played Kearsley of the Bolton League at Westhoughton for a winner-take-all Champions of Cup Champions game (which Kearsely won).

"The team successfully defended the Cross Cup in 1985, winning at Little Hulton – against Clifton again I believe.

"The players are, back from left, Ken Hitchen (middle-order left-hand bat and rocket inbetween the wickets), Rod Charnock (wicket keeper and number 11 blocker), Gary Connolly (right-arm fast bowler with a Michael Holding-length run-up), Anthony Gill (right-arm fast bowler in the style of Jeff Thompson), Mick Moore (middle-order right-hand bat and one of the quickest between the wickets being an ex-league footballer), Mick Howard (professional off-spin bowler and left-hand bat); front, Alan Harrison (right-hand middle-order bat), David Cadman (middle-order right-hand bat), Lawrence Moore (captain of both Adlington and BDCA and opening right-hand bat and professional first slip or short leg), Eddie Haddon (all-rounder and middle-order bat), Mick Leyland (all-rounder and opening right-hand batter and inswinging bowler).

"Both Mick Leyland and Mick Howard were famous for bowling 40 eight-ball overs in tandem in under two hours.

"Scorer at the time, I later hit the highest amateur individual score in Adlington first-team club history and the second highest score of all time in BDCA Cross Cup first-team competition."
