KEITH Hill believes his improving side is heading in the right direction after the stalemate against Blackpool.

Wanderers shaded last night’s televised game and had chances either side of half time to secure their first league victory since March.

Hill had to contend with the first-half loss of Liam Bridcutt, who faces a scan to assess if he has fractured his collarbone and also revealed that Will Buckley suffered a hairline fracture of his kneecap in last week’s Leasing.com Trophy game at Rochdale.

But with defensive organisation improving the Bolton boss feels he has something to work with in the club’s relegation fight.

“We have to be better in the attacking third,” he said. “There’s a structure of how I want to play and the players are getting that now, they are looking fitter.

“We’ve had one or two injuries which has led to us having a smaller squad than it should be.

“I am encouraged by the young players but we have to show a little bit more bravery to make the distances up to score those goals.

“Blackpool are a good side; thoroughbred League One opposition. They have got a been there, seen it, done it manager.

“I enjoyed the game but I look at our structure and it’s there to build on.”

Joe Dodoo made his debut from the bench in the second half, going close on a couple of occasions to breaking the deadlock.

“He can definitely give us that attacking edge but he’s got to get up to speed,” Hill said.

“It’s why he didn’t start but as a wide striker or a central striker I think he’ll give us what we need.”

Hill has secured three home draws since taking charge, leaving his side on minus eight points – 17 off safety.

Wanderers have brought in 11 players but with the squad now showing signs of settling the manager has certainly not given up hope of a push for survival.

“I enjoy tasks, I have no fear taking on this opportunity,” he said.

“There is definitely a chance to grow and there’s 102 points to play for, which encourages me when I look at the performance and something to build on.

“We are going to climb and we’re going to fight but assembling this squad has been really enjoyable. The players embraced what the situation was at the football club, they all wanted to jump on board and see how we can climb the league.”

“We are embracing it, the players are, there’s no fear. If we can turn that kind of performance into a platform and add a bit more creativity, score goals, we’ll be formidable in League One.”
