THE greenhouses as Walton Hall and Gardens have reopened after more than 25 years.
And our photographer Dave Gillespie has been to take a look around the newly-restored site.
One of the town’s best-loved historical assets, the glasshouses were officially unveiled to the public on Thursday, October 10, after a £2million restoration programme.
Walton Hall’s conservatories had fallen into disrepair since closing to the public in September 1993.
But Warrington Borough Council secured funds from the National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2016 in order to bring the greenhouses back to life.
The council has been working in partnership with Rosslee Construction over the past three years and the glasshouses have now ‘retaken their proud place as part of the vibrant estate’.
Restoration efforts involved retaining more than 90 per cent of the original brickwork, dating back as far as 1899, while the existing ironworks were repaired and reused.
A mixture of original and new timber beams were also used.
