TENSIONS are rising over the state in which pavements have been left following the installation of a new ultrafast internet network.

Sections of road and paths in the Randal Street area of Blackburn have been left in a ‘dangerous and problematic’ state following the work, which has seen engineers digging deep to insert the new cabling.

Residents are also concerned about the ongoing effects of the work, with many roads in the area still blocked off to allow for the installation to take place.

In a bid to get something done about the holes and chunks of loose asphalt in the street, residents have called on their local councillor to take action.

Cllr Akhtar said he was ‘deeply concerned’ that the shoddy work could lead to ‘serious accidents’.

He said: “I have been contacted by numerous people about the terrible way in which the streets have been left so I decided to come down to see it for myself and speak to the residents.

“I can’t believe the irresponsible way in which the paths have been left - the tarmac is already coming loose from the holes they had filled in and is lying all over the pathway.

“It is one thing that it makes the whole area a mess, but my main concern is the fact someone could very realistically have a bad accident by tripping and falling – especially with the cold weather and ice starting.”

Many of the area’s roads and footpaths have also been closed while the work is carried out in the area – with Cllr Akhtar saying traffic flow has also been an issue. He said: “I am all for making improvements to the area and this project is going to be very beneficial to many people.

“But this is not acceptable and I will be seeking advice on what we can do about this if it is not rectified urgently.”

Blackburn with Darwen Council confirmed the project to deliver ultrafast broadband in the Bastwell, Brookhouse and Shear Brow areas back in October, with work starting at the end of the month. Speaking at the time, a spokesman said: “This is a major expansion project, which can impact residents and road users for short periods of time, whilst work is carried out.

“The installation of communications cabinets will be followed by cable installation in the footways from week commencing October 28. The work is likely to take four months to complete.”

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “Virgin Media is in the process of expanding its network in Blackburn which will bring ultrafast broadband speeds to local residents and businesses.

“Before works commenced in the area, we engaged and briefed all Councillors as well as notifying all homes and businesses. We understand that this type of work can cause disruption and we have tried to minimise this as much as possible, such as us stopping works entirely at the weekend for a local event.

“The condition of roads and pathways have been monitored throughout the build and we will work closely with the council to ensure that any corrective works are completed and meet the required standards. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
