A PROPOSAL to build more than 100 new homes has been turned down.
Burnley Council's development control committee rejected plans to build 130 homes in Briercliffe, which were lodged by Countryside Homes.
The proposals would have seen the houses built in Standen Hall Drive.
The bid was strongly opposed by hundreds of residents, who came together to compile opposing reports.
At a committee meeting, resident David Waddington stressed concerns about access to the site along Standen Hall Drive, and problems which would be faced by nearby schools and the medical centre - if a new estate was built.
Briercliffe councillors Margaret Lishman and Anne Kelly, the mayor of Burnley, also attended the meeting and sat with residents against the proposals.
Briercliffe councillor Gordon Lishman also spoke against the application.
According to the developers, the proposal would have delivered aspirational family homes to attract working-age skilled people to the area, sustaining labour supply.
After hearing residents' views and the debate, councillors voted to reject the application on the grounds of traffic issues.
