BLACKBURN with Darwen's gritters were sent out last night due to freezing temperatures expecting to last into this morning.

Today the minimum temperature could get down as low as -1.2C, with frost and ice predicted to last into the morning.

A Blackburn with Darwen spokesman said: "Our gritting returns again after another short break.

"I have looked at the two to five day forecast and there is no indication as yet of any snow on the day of the general election.

"Road surface temperatures were predicted to fall away quickly under clear skies last night, widely below zero.

"A risk of hoar frost and local icy patches from any damp spots were also predicted.

"Road surface temperatures were expected to recover later in the night, as southerly winds strengthen and cloud builds in from the west.

"There's a chance of cloud and wind, with outbreaks of rain this morning."
