The Conservative Party have held Altrincham and Sale West in the General Election 2019.

After 75.1pc of voters turned out across the constituency and 173 spoilt ballot papers were discounted, Sir Graham Brady has been re-elected to represent the area with a 6,139 vote lead.

The results for the seat in full are:

Sir Graham Brady (Conservative Party): 26,311

Coun Andrew Western (Labour Party): 20,172

Ms Angela Smith (Liberal Democrats Party): 6,036

Coun Geraldine Coggins (Green Party): 1,566

Mr Neil Taylor (Liberal Party): 454

Ms Iram Kiani (Independent candidate): 224

Despite the best efforts of Labour’s campaigners who have been out in force in the lead up to the count, Coun Andrew Western couldn’t quite close the 10,000 vote margin between him and Sir Graham Brady seen at the 2017 election.

The Liberal Democrats’ Angela Smith also missed out and her and her electoral agent shed tears and hugged just before the result was read out.

Ms Smith defected from Labour earlier this year to form ChangeUK, before moving again to the Liberal Democrats Party in the hope of capitalising on the remain vote.

Ms Smith lost her position as an MP in the South Yorkshire seat of Penistone and Stocksbridge since 2010 when she decided to stand as a candidate in Altrincham and Sale West this year.

She had previously been MP for Sheffield Hallam from 2005 to 2010.

Now, the popular MP of 22 years Sir Graham Brady will return to his seat in Westminster and continue in his role as chairman of the Tories’ 1922 committee, which elects its party leaders.

Celebrating his victory, Sir Brady said: "I so much hope that this General Election marks the moment that we can move on from the bitterness and rancour and personal animosity that has dogged too much of out politics."

He then thanked the other candidates for the high quality debates they had shared during the campaign.

He added: “We have enjoyed each other’s company and that’s how it should be and that’s how it will be in future, thank you.”

Following a predicted landslide win for the Tories nationally in the exit poll, runner-up Coun Andrew Western for Labour looked noticeably dispondent.

He said: “Clearly this is a disappointing night for the Labour Party nationally. I want to take the opportunity to congratulate Graham on his reelection and his continuing service after 22 years as Member of Parliament for Altrincham and Sale West.

“I am extremely concerned about the results we have seen nationally and what that means for the direction of our country.

“I want to say this to the residents of Altrincham and Sale West and across Trafford, that as leader of this council and as a local campaigner I will continue to fight for you, to fight for your services and protect you.

“And I fear that, sadly, many will need that protection in the years ahead. Thank you.”
