With Christmas firmly behind us, millions of Brits will be looking to book 2020 travels this month.

But for those who have ambitious New Year’s Resolution is to save rather than splurge this year – here are some tips and tricks to do both — courtesy of The Points Guy UK website.

1. Deals – keep your ears very close to the ground for deals. At The Points Guy UK they scour the internet every day to source the hottest deals, both for short and long haul, and for economy and premium class flights.

2. Flexibility – following on from being open to deals, an element of flexibility will always allow you to make the most from travel. Many people are bound by school holidays or other commitments, but the more flexible you can be, the better chance you have of nabbing a deal, or finding availability for flights using your miles.

3. Tesco – £2.50 in Tesco Clubcard vouchers can be transferred into 600 BA Avios or 625 Virgin Flying Club Miles. On an average spend of £200 a week, a family could rack up 25,000 Avios over the course of a year via Tesco.

4. Shopping Portals – Use the BA Avios eStore or the Virgin Atlantic Shops Away portals to earn miles from all major online retailers. You can rack up huge amounts of points with current offers including 6 Avios per pound spent at ASOS and Apple, and 12 Avios per pound spent at T M Lewin and Net-A-Porter.

5. Credit cards – Rewards credit cards only make sense to use if you can manage them sensibly, and pay off bills in full, on time every month. There are a variety of cards like the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Card, which have good sign up bonuses and ongoing earning rates, and at The Points Guy UK we can help you find the right one. Once you get it, always use it instead of a debit card or cash to earn points on all your day to day spending.

6. Earn when you fly – whenever you fly on an airline that has a loyalty programme, make sure you sign up (it’s free!) and punch in your frequent flyer number to earn points that would otherwise be left on the table.

7. Have a goal – work out your dream way to use your points. For most people this will be something like first class flights to New York. Once you know how much this is going to cost in points, you can put together a strategy using the above tips to get yourself there!
