A CAR was left facing the wrong way into traffic after smashing into a tree during a crash.

The Volkswagen Beetle had collided with a tree after the driver lost control in Bury Old Road, Ainsworth, shortly before 9pm on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to the scene but the driver had fled before they arrived.

The car was badly damaged in the crash and was said to be a "write off".

Steve Urmston, watch manager at Bury Fire station, said: "We were called to a road traffic collision in Bury Old Road in which a car had hit a tree head on. It had then gone up the roadside banking and turned itself around and was facing the wrong way.

"There was no one there when we got there. We made the area safe and called the police as the car was in the road.

"We closed the road temporarily one way until the police arrived."

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for comment.
