A BURY woman has started off the new year by celebrating her one hundredth birthday.

Mary Mosedale became a centenarian on Sunday, January 5 and celebrated with a party at Abbedydale residential home, where she has lived since 2012.

Christine Elleray, 71, who lives with Mary in the home, said: "She has been a really good mum and a really good grandmother to my two grandchildren.

"It was a really good birthday party and all her family and friends came to see her. She was really pleased to get a card from the Queen as she is a strong Royalist."

As a young girl Mary loved to help her mother bake and care for her six siblings. When she grew older and the Second World War descended across Europe, Mary worked in a munitions factory to help with the war effort.

Over her life she has worked in a variety of jobs, with many of her happiest memories coming from her time as a weaver in a cotton mill.

She married husband Harry on February 14, 1947.

A year later the couple welcomed their daughter Christine who has gone on to have two children, Mark and Rebecca, whom Mary loved to look after as they were growing up.

May has also had four pets throughout her life whom she adored — Beauty the budgie, Scampy the dog, and two cats, Tabby and Misty.

Lucy Webber, manager at the home, said: "She is a very kind lady and is always happy. She always wants everyone else to be happy and she will reminisce about younger life."
