A murder inquiry has been launched after a man was fatally stabbed in East Lancashire.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is now in police custody.

Armed police were called to an address in Edleston Street, Accrington just before 1pm on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called at shortly before 1pm today (Sunday, January 19) to a report that a man had been stabbed at an address on Edleston Street in Accrington.

"Paramedics attended the address but sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A murder inquiry has been launched and is in its very early stages.

"A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody."

The Lancashire Telegraph were contacted by concerned residents after hearing reports that a man had been stabbed in the town.

People in the area have said they are now fearing for their safety after residents were stopped from entering or leaving the street.

Tazmin Jayne, whose parents live on Edleston Street said: "My dad and mum both live on that street.

"I’d been shopping with my dad and we returning to his house when all the police passed us.

"There were about ten police cars and vans, two armed police vans, four armed policemen in the street and we weren’t allowed to leave or enter the front of the street.

"I had to leave my dad's via his back door. My mum can’t yet return to her address as the street’s taped off.

"It's madness and it's really scary."

One lady who lives on the street but did not wish to be named told the Telegraph: "There are armed police currently on Edleston Street in Accrington.

"We think someone has been stabbed, it makes me worry for my safety."

Another resident who also wished to remain anonymous said: "The top of the street is all taped off and police had someone on Blackburn Road in handcuffs.

"Theres a white tent on the alleyway."
