THE star striker providing a mean left foot finish may have been somewhat overdressed - but then again, he was the chief Constable of Greater Manchester!

Sir James Anderton is pictured at St Stephen’s Church School, Bury, back in 1984 when he was the special guest at the school’s summer fete.

Mr Anderton as he was back then officially opened the fete and then went straight to the beat the goalie stand, and put three penalties past the ‘keeper without any problem.

A controversial figure, Mr Anderton was chief constable for 15 years from 1976 to 1991. He was known for his criticism of soft sentencing and was a keen proponent of national ID cards and the creation of a national police force. He also had outspoken views on morality

He received a knighthood in 1990, retiring the following year.
