These funny pictures show what could be the fattest squirrel in the UK - who still can't stop chomping on a nut.

Part-time photographer David Oxtaby was on his daily afternoon walk when the sizeable grey squirrel caught his eye.

The chunky tree-dweller was unfazed by the approaching photographer as it stood comfortably near the roots of a tree, laser-focused on eating its dinner.

The rotund rodent looked like it has enjoyed a few too many hazelnuts, although it is also possible that it was eating for two.

The pictures, taken in Horton Park in Bradford, last autumn are some of David’s favourites - as he loves spotting unusual wildlife.

David, from Bingley, said: “I was on my daily walk in the park one afternoon when I spotted the chunky squirrel.

“I’ve never seen such a big squirrel before so I got my camera out.

“It caught my eye immediately because it was just so large. I thought ‘look at the size of that one’.

“He seemed really engrossed with his meal, he was just chomping away. Which probably explains why he was so big.

“I’m really happy with the picture because it’s quite funny and you always want to capture something unusual.”

Grey squirrels don’t hibernate over winter but are known to eat their entire body weight’s worth of food in a week during autumn to store fat to brave the cold winter.

The greedy eaters will also collect and hide nuts to enjoy later on.

The IT manager primarily shoots landscape photography but said he finds snapping wildlife relaxing as it allows him to get some fresh air.

He said: “I do mainly landscape photography but I do some wildlife as well when I go on walks because I find it therapeutic.

“It’s nice to get some fresh air as well.
