Two fitness instructors have hosted a Zumbathon to help a double amputee complete a charity parachute jump.

Zoey Rufus and Charlene Pant ran the event at Horwich Leisure Centre on Friday evening for Rick Clement, a former Sergeant in the Army who lost both his legs in 2010 after being hit by an explosive in Afghanistan.

The bilateral amputee suffered a variety of additional injuries in the blast, including nerve damage to his hand and elbow, a fractured pelvis, and a large number of scars.

Rick wants to tick things off his bucket list, and has chosen the sky dive as a fundraiser for Scotty’s Little Soldiers – although he will need a custom built harness to complete the tandem jump in the Spring.

The dance event raised £500 for the event with zumba, games, and a raffle, all going towards his £5,000 goal for the charity that supports the bereaved children of military parents.

Rick said: "It's really amazing that they've got all that to go towards the total and that money will hopefully make a real difference to children who've lost parents.

"I served with Megan [Holmes]'s dad in the Duke of Lancaster Regiment and she spoke to the instructors of the dance group she'd been going to and they were on board with fundraising so Megan is the shining light that started this, I can't thank her enough.

"Their support is massive, it's really important that all of the people who suffered are supported – from people like me who were injured to children who lost parents or those with PTSD. It's nice to know that the public are behind us and raising money."

Scotty’s Little Soldiers was set up by Nikki Scott after her husband Lee tragically lost his life in Afghanistan.

She saw the impact that Lee’s death had on their two children and decided to set up the charity to help other children who had experienced the loss of a parent serving in the British Armed Forces.

Rick has currently raised just under £1,500, although his current total does not include the funds from Friday's event.
