POLICE have been patrolling Bury's Metrolink line as part of an operation to prevent serious crime.

Officers were out in force yesterday as part of Operation Sycamore — which aims to tackle serious violent crime in the borough.

Teams wore plain clothes as well as uniform to "catch people in the act."

The officers are part of the newly formed transport unit, which was set up at the end of last year to help keep the travelling public safe.

The team provides a policing presence across the region’s transport network to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) and improve public confidence and road safety.

A notice was installed at the Metrolink station, which read: "Preventing knife crime to keep our streets safer."

Greater Manchester Police's Bury South team posted on Facebook at about 5pm yesterday: "The transport unit are currently out and about on the Bury line looking for people causing criminality and antisocial behaviour.

"See anything suspicious? Please call 101 and let us know."
