Police have reassured residents that there is no cause for concern after people were spotted visiting the Spread Eagle pub despite the coronavirus lockdown.

Bolton North police say they received "a number" of calls regarding the pub in Bromley Cross, as neighbours believed they were defying government rules to stop serving customers as usual.

However, the policing team revealed that the staff had actually set up a community market, offering fruit, vegetables, cheese, and meats to local residents.

A post to the GMP Bolton North Facebook page read: "We have received a number of calls in relation to the Spread Eagle Public House, #BromleyCross serving customers following lockdown.

"The staff at the pub have set up a community market. They are open from 09:30hrs for NHS staff and over 60’s and from 10:30 for everyone.

"Further information is on their Facebook page."
