FRESH plans to redevelop the site of the former Mondi paper mill site in Ramsbottom have been under the microscope.

Blueprints have been lodged with Bury Council for 83 homes on the Bridge Street site.

And developers Eccleston Homes says it wants to retain what remains of the former paper mill chimney stack and two old mill buildings.

Planning applicant John Matthews said in a statement to the borough's development control section: "The subject vacant site is in a prime location within the town scape of Ramsbottom.

"The application proposals have evolved to address site constraints, the character and appearance of the area.

"The proposals include 83 dwellings in a range of sizes, styles and designs providing choice and diversity to new and existing residents."

Former Bury North MP James Frith had hoped the Mondi site would be used for retail and parking.

All views on the scheme must be lodged with the borough council by the end of this week.
