WHILE time at the bar may have temporarily be called at pubs across the country, due to the ongoing lockdown, one unique Bury watering hole is continuing to do a rip-roaring trade to help support a good cause.

Last year police officer Richard King built his own pub in a shed at the bottom of the garden at his Radcliffe home — with a little help from seven-year-old son Noah and father-in-law, Phil Dale.

Affectionately named The King's Head, the shed boasts a full bar, including optics, and all the trappings of a traditional British pub — from a dart board and music system, to classic football shirts and a ceiling made from beer mats.

During the lockdown, as well as enjoying a well earned pint, Mr King and his wife Katie, have been running a popular virtual pub quiz from the bar.

Mrs King said: “We didn’t realise how invaluable the pub would be during the lockdown. It’s the best thing having a pub at the bottom of your garden when all the pubs are closed.

“As soon as the lockdown was announced everyone was a bit low as it was new and scary. So I thought it would be nice to get together and do a bit of a quiz.”

From initially just involving family and friends, the King’s quiz was opened up to the public and has proven a smash hit — attracting up to 65 teams and participants from around the world, including Australia, Greece and Spain.

“It has been absolutely fantastic, and everyone said it’s the best night in they’ve had in a long time,” Mrs King added.

The King family are now preparing to host a special charity quiz to fundraise for Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary, where Mrs King volunteers as a photographer.

The quiz will take place on April 30 via a Facebook Live stream, and will also include a raffle with prizes donated by regional businesses.

Mrs King said: “The work they do at Bleakholt is amazing and we hope to raise as much money as we can for them.”
