A FORMER furniture store in Radcliffe town centre could have a new future as a gym complex.

Lovicks ceased operating in Blackburn Street last summer - but the building has been under offer for some time.

Proposals have now been lodged with Bury Council to convert the sprawling premises into a fitness centre.

Supporters of the scheme say it will be the first major exercise presence in the town centre since the leisure centre was demolished in 2016.

Under the Group Training banner, Bolton-based applicant Daniel Smart says his plans could be the best solution when it comes to redeveloping the site.

He said: "It is likely the vacancy period of the building is as a result of the tough retail trading environment. The retail sector is likely to suffer further due to the impact of Covid-19, making it even less likely this building will be occupied by a retailer if left vacant."

Training areas would be created across the two former main showrooms on the ground and first floors.

Mr Smart added: "Since the demolition of Radcliffe Leisure centre, there has not been a health and fitness

offering within the town centre.

"This application will not only reintroduce a gym into the town centre but would bring positive footfall, particularly during typically quieter times, ie in the morning between 6am and 10am and in the evening between 4.30pm and 8pm.

"This application will help promote the vitality and viability of Radcliffe town centre during a challenging environment in the retail sector, which is made even more challenging by the negative impacts on the economy of Covid-19.

The former Flying Flute pub next door, at the corner of Green Street, which had also been the old Henderson store, is currently being converted into a house of multiple occupation.
