MEMBERS of all ages from a Bury Sports Club have undergone an array of fundraising challengers to raise money for the upkeep of their facilities.

Westbury Sports Club has seen its income stream slashed due to the suspension of sports and the affect of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, coaches and plucky youngsters from some of the clubs sports teams have raised more than £2,000 to help support their community club.

Donna Plimley, a committee member at the club, said: "We had stopped our fees due to the coronavirus and obviously that means money stops coming into the club.

"Throughout the summer, we prepare the pitch for the new season and it is a big thing for us to do.

"We didn't ask anyone to fundraise or bring it up to any of them- they all just decided to do it themselves."

The club has several football teams for youngsters, as well as rounders teams for girls and ladies.

Carl Slater who manages the Westbury Warrior’s U13’s, regularly Santa for the little ones of Westbury Sports Club every Christmas and he suggested that the team's platers should dribble a ball around the club's home ground of Wellington Barracks 100 times.

The team decided the way they wanted to make some money for the club was for their Manager Carl to shave off all his hair and beard for the cause.

The target was to try and raise £250 but within days Carl and the Warriors raised £850 which would go on to help pay for seeds, weed and feed for the club.

The success set the precedent for other age groups to come up with more fundraisers, with the Rhino’s U9s team taking on a sponsored 5k bike ride, scooter or run over the weekend of the 13th June.

Again the initial target was set for £250 but was smashed with a whopping £1221.

Donna added: "We are are very grateful the amount of money we have received to help our club from all the parents, family and teams that have made this all possible.

"It really has helped loads. We have already prepared the pitches and have been able to improve the club for the new season."
