A YOUNG teacher pedalled to the limit as he took on his biggest challenge to date and cycled the length of Great Britain for a great cause.

Jake Chadwick, 23, cycled from Land’s End in Cornwall to John o’ Groats in Scotland to fundraise for charity after the tragic loss of his grandfather to cancer last year.

The former Derby High School headboy completed the titanic feat in just 10 days, cycling roughly 100 miles every 24 hours.

He was joined by his dad, David, for 30 miles everyday during the English part of the route, and his cousin, Marcus Huby, then teamed up for the Scottish leg.

Thankfully the ride went without a hitch and the riders suffered no mechanical troubles.

But Mr Chadwick and his companions did battle the elements, from storms and 40 mph gales on their first day, to blistering heat as they cycled through the fells of the Lake District.

Along the route Mr Chadwick made a 70 mile detour to visit the town of Elgin where his grandfather had lived and another to ride by his mum, Rebecca’s, house in Bury.

Mr Chadwick, who is originally from Bury but now lives in Blackburn, said: “I did this bike ride because I wanted to challenge myself.

“My grandad went through a lot for two years so I wanted to put myself through something and raise some money for Prostate Cancer UK."

Admittedly not a keen cyclist, Mr Chadwick said he was inspired to bike across the country after completing a similar challenge between Burnley and Bournemouth in three days.

He added: “I’m proud of what I managed to do. It was actually enjoyable.

“There were some days which weren’t fun and I won’t be doing it again. But I’m glad I did it.”

So far, as a result of his mammoth bike ride, Mr Chadwich has raised over £2,7000 for Prostate Cancer UK.

The cause is one that is very close to his heart, Mr Chadwick said, after his grandfather’s death from the disease in April 2019.

His mum Rebecca said: “It was my dad that we lost to prostate cancer last year and due to Covid-19 we have not been able to mark this one year on.

“So Jake has absolutely amazed us with his bike ride. He’s our hero.”
