THE number of recorded coronavirus cases in Bolton jumped by 228 over the weekend, official figures show.

Public Health England figures show that 4,637 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Monday in Bolton, up from 4,409 the same time on Friday.

The health body is now including Pillar 2 tests – those carried out by commercial partners – alongside Pillar 1 tests, which are analysed in NHS or PHE laboratories and which made up the first stage of the Government's mass testing programme.

The rate of infection in Bolton now stands at 1,613 cases per 100,000 people, far higher than the England average of 670.

Bolton is now placed fifth in the country for its infection rate.

Figures, for the seven days to September 25, show Bolton had 666 new cases recorded, the equivalent to 231.6 per 100,000.

The UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 15,777 over the period, to 439,013.

Bolton's cases were among the 80,555 recorded across the North West, a figure which rose by 4,352 over the period.

Knowsley has the highest rate in England with 279.7 cases per 100,000 people.

Burnley has the second highest rate, up sharply from 157.4 to 269.9 with 240 new cases.
Liverpool is in third place, where the rate has jumped from 165.4 to 262.2 with 1,306 new cases.


The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on September 28 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.
