NEW arrangements are being made to mark Remembrance Day in two of the borough's towns.

Social distancing and the rule of six has resulted in organisers of Bury's commemorations to consider alternatives.

Promoters of the annual event in Bury are already considering different ways of remembering those who made the supreme sacrifice.

And now their colleagues in Prestwich and Radcliffe are discussing how they will best commemorate the day.

In Prestwich, like every other location, there will be no parade or public act of remembrance.

But organiser Daniel Thomas says Armstice Day is not being forgotten.

He told the Bury Times: "Prestwich has a long military history and a strong community spirit.

"But this year for the first time, the Prestwich war memorial will be unattended as residents in Bury are advised to remain at home for the traditional two minutes’ silence.

"However this year councillors, residents and community leaders in Prestwich have grouped together to keep the spirit of remembrance alive with an online, community driven video tribute.

"School, clubs, community groups and businesses throughout Prestwich and are urged to lay their own wreaths, crosses and tributes at the Prestwich Memorial a week earlier, on Saturday , October 31, throughout the day.

"The video will be published over social media on the morning of the seventh.

"They will also be given the chance to send in a short video on behalf of their organisations, to pay tribute.

"Anyone wishing to contribute can e-mail Prestwich.remembers@gmail.com for more information on how to get involved.

A live-streamed broadcast is being planned for the actual two minutes’ silence on Remembrance Sunday for residents in Bury."

Meanwhile in Radcliffe, an appeal has been issued for those wishing to have a wreath laid at the town's cenotaph, as their parade has also been cancelled.

Parade marshall, Warrant Officer Barry Young, said: "Due to the government’s Covid restrictions banning large gatherings we cannot guarantee everyone’s safety and that a large crowd forming so as per Bury Council's instructions we must cancel.

"With this in mind if you have a wreath which you would like to lay on the cenotaph please feel free to lay it when you can.

"If possible use the days before November 8 to lay your wreath and pay your respects.

"I must reiterate that we must respect these instructions and not form large gatherings."

Further details on the arrangements for Bury are expected to be released soon.
