A convenience store in Breightmet is set to change hands after Co-op decided to sell up.

The Co-op on Bury Road will be open for the last time on November 7, before being taken over by its new operator, Nisa.

The store has been a Co-op for many years, serving several generations of the local community.

Representatives for the new owner have confirmed that all the staff will retain their jobs, with potentially new roles being advertised in the future.

As Nisa is owned by the Co-op, it will continue to sell the same Co-op branded product lines, as well as providing new services such as takeaway food.

It hasn’t been revealed by the Co-op why they have decided to sell the site, but they said that it was one of the ‘difficult decisions’ they have had to take.

The company also thanked the public for their custom over the years.

A Co-op spokesperson, said: “The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum and while this often involves opening new stores, we also have to take difficult decisions. It has been agreed to sell our store in Breightmet.

“The well-being of our colleagues is a number one priority and we are pleased to confirm that they have the opportunity to transfer to the new operator under TUPE arrangements, and are being fully supported throughout the sale.

“We would like to thank the community for its support over the years.”

A spokesperson for the new owner said: “We felt it was a good opportunity to take over the store when we saw that the Co-op were selling.

“All the staff and management will be kept on in the new store, and in fact we hope to advertise more roles in the future.

“As Nisa is owned by the Co-op we will still sell all the Co-op brands, it will still be a Co-op just with a different name above.

“There will be new services available, such a a hot food stand, a slush machine, milkshakes and takeaway food which will be prepared in store.

“We will also offer a Payzone and bills paying service.

“It will be a fresh new store offering more for our customers.”
