Essa Academy have closed their Year 9 bubble for two weeks from today following several coronavirus cases among pupils.

All Year 9 students have been sent home and will continue to attend virtual classes this week. They will also isolate at home over half term next week.

Laptops have been provided to 50 pupils and those on free school meals will receive an e-voucher for a local supermarket.

Principal of Essa Academy Martin Knowles said: "Over the past few days, we have been notified of covid cases within the year 9 bubble. We have conducted our own internal track and trace identifying students who have been in close contact.

"Following guidance, we sent those students home to isolate. However, over the weekend further cases have confirmed positive and regretfully I made the decision to close the Year 9 bubble.

"It is half term next week which means student will be working remotely for this week and continue to isolate for half term.

"To support remote learning 50 Year 9 students have been provided with a laptop, all students on free school meals will be provided with an e-voucher for a local supermarket to fund their meals at home. Lessons will be delivered via our outstanding 'Essa Live!' remote learning platform as per the students' normal daily timetable.

"We are at the mercy of this hidden virus and my priority will always be to keep everyone safe. I thank our wonderful students, staff, and families for their support.

"One day we will get back to normal for our school community, Bolton and country. All young people deserve a settled education and a great future."
