POLICE officers will be equipped with new cutting-edge technology thanks to a multi-million pound investment.

This comes in the form of a fleet of high-tech body cameras, unveiled on Wednesday by Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw.

The cameras include features such as an automatic 30 second video pre-record so officers never miss the beginning of an incident and will also allow officer to review and tag footage on their phones.

Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw said: "It was great to see how body worn video will be used by Lancashire Police officers to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and to help with evidence gathering.

"Investment in technology is crucial to ensure that Lancashire Police has the modern tools to deal with policing challenges of the 21st Century.

"The roll out of this technology will be a vital tool in bringing offenders to justice, especially those who take part in crime that is naturally more difficult to prosecute such as domestic abuse and public order offences."

Lancashire Police officers were first introduced to body worn technology in 2014 and since then it has become a more and more important part of their work.

The new body cameras, designed by Motorola, are of a much higher quality than those used previously.

The technology also helps to improve accountability and transparency with incidents more likely to be captured on camera.

So far, over 1,200 officers have been trained to use the cameras with more to follow.

Constabulary’s lead for digital transformation Chief Inspector Dave Hannan said: “This investment is about giving our officers the best tools we can for the job, making it quicker and more efficient and improving the quality of evidence, so we can provide a great service to victims and the public.

“Deployment is going really well so far, with officers eager to get their hands on the new equipment

“We can’t wait to see everyone using them and truly reap the rewards for the force and our communities in Lancashire.”
