PHOTOS have emerged from a serious crash which closed part of the M6 in both directions for several hours earlier today.

The motorway was closed in both directions just after midday at junction 27, near Wigan, after a oil tanker crashed with a car and a bridge.

Both northbound and southbound lanes were closed for several hours to deal with the incident, however northbound lanes have since re-opened.

Photos shared by station manager for Bolton North Fire Station and Horwich Fire Station, Ady Taylor, and North West Motorway Police show the aftermath of the incident.

Speaking on Twitter, Station Manager Ady Taylor said: "RTC on the M6 this afternoon with @manchesterfire, @HighwaysNWEST, @MerseyPolice, @NWAmbulance, car and tanker, I attended as #Hazmats, no injuries from the car, the tanker driver airlifted to hospital for precautionary measures."

North Way Motorway Police have confirmed that the parties involved are in a "serious but stable condition".

A spokesperson for North West Motorway Police said: "The RTC at M6 J27 involved multiple vehicles. The parties involved are in a serious but stable condition. The road remains closed southbound for repairs."

They later added: "Closure remains in place for resurfacing works to take place overnight.

"All traffic on the southbound carriageway is being diverted off via the exit slip road to re-join via the entry slip road until the resurfacing works have been completed."
