A BURY INN’S BEER GARDEN has been named as one of the best in country.

Eagle and Child Inn on Whalley Road, Ramsbottom, made it onto Big 7 Travel’s ’25 Best Beer Gardens in the Country’ coming in at 21st.

The pub was selected based on several factors, including editorial opinion, critic reviews and value for money.

The company stands out for its unique vision and quirky allotment area which is why the outdoor area has been named ‘The Edible Beer Garden’.

Glen Duckett, landlord of the inn, said he was delighted when his beer garden was featured.

He dreamed of making a new style of beer garden that blends horticulture with the traditional pub atmosphere.

Mr Duckett said: “We grow a variety of fruit and vegetables and also have hens for eggs.

“We have edible flowers and grow Mediterranean vegetables in the Greenhouse.

“All the produce is then used in the kitchen”

Aside from planting beds and allotments, the beer garden also has a host of other unique features.

According to Glen, it’s the perfect place for parents to enjoy a drink while the children play as it is home to a  play area.

He said: “It’s also a family-friendly beer garden with a decent kids play area- and we also host messy play sessions.

“It’s a safe environment too, with secure walled gardens.”

The garden is also a bit of a suntrap and Glen says it’s a delight to relax in during the summer months.

“It gets the sun all day,” he explained. “During the evening, you can also watch the sun set over Peel Tower.”

The company also host workshops; currently, they are working on some willow sculptures.

However, if you are hoping to make the most of the April sunshine and head out to the beer garden today you might be disappointed.

The pub will be reopening in May when all of Glen’s planned refurbishments have been completed.

However, it will be worth the wait as customers will have brand new refurbishments and menus to enjoy.

Glen said: “We’re having a bit of a refurbishment and redecoration inside and some work done in the kitchen.

“We have also put in proper bar outside so people can enjoy a drink outdoors.”

Guests can also look forward to a new and improved menu which contains classic items, as well as some “with a twist”.

According to Glen, the inn’s beer garden isn’t the only aspect of the business that helps them to stand out.

The business is a social enterprise with a focus on helping the underprivileged and unemployed.

Glen said: “The reason we set up the pub in the first place was to train young people.

“We work specifically with young people who have had a hard time at school, have a learning disability of if they have been in trouble.”

They also take part in the Eramus + programme which Glen describes as an “exchange programme” which allows young people from other countries to undertake a range of vocational projects.

In previous years they have worked with people from France but plan to also work with young people in Spain and Puerto Ventura.
