OFFICERS were left shocked at some of the speeds motorists were said to have reached in Hollins during a routine speed check.

Special police officers staged roadside police checks on Croft Lane in Hollins recently as part of a crackdown on speeding drivers.

A numbers of drivers were given tickets at the roadside while others received a summons to court.

The highest speed officers said they recorded was 68 mph on the stretch, with other motorists alleged to have reached 52mph and 42 mph on the 30mph busy road leading to Pilsworth.

A spokesman for GMP Special Constabulary said: "These speeds are for the motorway - not for Croft Lane in #Unsworth #Whitefield

"Most drivers reported by means of traffic offence reports (roadside tickets) but some were summoned straight to court...

"Oh, and for those who don't know, its 30 along Croft Lane."

Speed enforcement exercises are taking place across the borough.

Last month Radcliffe police launched an operation which includes high visibility and low visibility patrols with enforcement taking places in areas where residents have expressed a concern.

They have included Radcliffe New Road, Bury Road and Church Street, Ainsworth.

The crackdown is part of a driver to improve safety and reduce criminality on Radcliffe's roads following collisions in the area, say police.

Police launched the operation earlier this month including high visibility and low visibility patrols with enforcement taking places in areas where residents have expressed a concern.

Launching the crackdown officers said: "We make no apologies for taking positive action against people who decide that the roads are their plaything and they can drive however they please without thought of pedestrians and other road users."
