A DRUMMER will be giving members of Bury Lions Club a night of nostalgic entertainment with a five hour ‘drum-a-thon’.

Lions vice-president Duncan Lees will playing a backing beat to a playlist of hits from the 1960s through to the 1980s to on Saturday to raise money for Bury Lions Club and The Jubilee Centre, Age UK’s headquarters, hoping to raise £30,000.

Inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore’s 100 laps around his garden, Duncan will play 100 songs from artists like The Beatles, The Eagles, Earth, Wind & Fire and Sam Cooke.

Duncan said: “I was bored out of my skull during lockdown, with constantly walking aimlessly around my home so I decided to take up the drums again. Thinking back to when I was at my most fit, I remembered playing the drums in the 60s.

“When I saw Capt Tom Moore doing 100 laps in the garden for the NHS and when he went on without complaining, I was really inspired. Now with diabetes and arthritis, I cannot walk very far, I thought playing the drums was the next best thing.”

Duncan picked up a passion for the drums, playing in a skiffle band in the Green Howards Regiment during his National Service in Hong Kong. Back home, he formed a band, The Talismen, in the early 1960s, which played across the North East.

He toured with several groups, including A Clockwork Orange, and drummed on several recording sessions.

Duncan added: “I picked up my passion for music from my father and uncles who were always singing, but I am the only musician in the family. My wife would always tell me off, because wherever we went, I would always be tapping on something or humming along.

"I’m doing this is to raise as much money as I can for people less fortunate than me by doing something I’m passionate about and that gives me pleasure.”
