EVERYONE’S favourite really useful engine chugged his way into town at the weekend — much to the delight of visitors young, old and in between.

With that instantly recognisable cheeky face peering from his iconic blue steam engine, it’s hard to believe that Thomas the Tank Engine turned 75 last year.

But as he made his way into Bury’s Bolton Street station on the East Lancashire Railway, the much-loved storybook steam locomotive proved he can still draw the crowds in.

The visit was part of the ELR's fantastic Day out With Thomas event which took place on Saturday and Sunday, following a successful visit in August.

Families gathered on the platform where they were met by the Fat Controller before boarding one of the carriages on the seemingly never-ending train to depart on a half-hour round trip to Ramsbottom and back.

The trip is much shorter than the usual full steam train route, from Bury to Rawtenstall, making it suitable for younger passengers.

There was plenty of fun to be had onboard with cheerful conductors bringing round colouring sheets and crayons, to go with the activity packs given to each child.

Cheerful music from the television adaptation played through the carriages as the picturesque scenes of Burrs Country Park and Summerseat passed by.

People walking through the park and stood on platforms waved in delight as the splendid engine chugged by, in what must have been a wonderful sight.

A happy voice boomed from the train’s speaker saying how wonderful it was to be back, as the ELR had been badly affected due to its closure during the pandemic.

On arriving back in Bury, the fun did not end there as there was more to see and do over at Bury Transport Museum with funfair rides included in the entry price.

Families clamoured on the platform to get a picture with the main man himself and even have a peep inside the coal-fired steam engine.

The Day out With Thomas is certainly as highlight of the ELR’s calendar but there is plenty more to look forward to including the Santa Special, taking place from next month.

Other events include Traction Days at Bury Transport Museum, Sundays in Steam, Steam Gala, Union of South Africa Farewell and Halloween Ghost Trains.
