PEOPLE from all faiths came together last weekend for a religious procession through Bury.

This Sunday, a walk was held to mark the birthday celebrations of the Prophet Mohammed.

More than 400 people joined the procession, from Bury Islamic Centre, including guests Bury North MP James Daly, Bury Council leader Cllr Eamonn O’Brien, deputy leader Cllr Tamoor Tariq, as well as Cllrs Trevor Holt, Gavin McGill, Richard Gold and Tahir Rafiq.

The procession was organised by centre chairman Liaqat Ali.

Mr Ali said: “Here in Bury, I am proud to say we have a multi-faith community and we wanted to bring all of this together.

“It’s important to raise awareness of the peaceful nature of Islam and how it offers a way you can live your life and it can help you contribute to society and uplift you emotionally and spiritually.

“When I first organised this event 15 years ago I was not sure if many people would turn up but many people came along and this year, they were were all very happy to come out of their homes and help celebrate.”

“After Covid-19 people are turning to faith once again which is great because it doesn’t matter what faith you believe in, as long as you believe in a higher power.

Mr Daly added: “I was delighted to join this very well established procession to honour the Prophet Mohammed.

“I’d like to thank all those who organised the event from the Islamic centre.”
