A YOB who threatened a manager with an axe after being kicked out of her bar has been jailed for 18 months.

Jamie Haslam, 27, had attempted to gain access to The Hops, in Silver Street, on the night of September 23, Minshull Street Crown Court was told.

Prosecutor Daniel James said Haslam was quickly identified as someone who had been barred from a number of licensed premises in Bury town centre because of his behaviour.

The court heard when the defendant was asked to step outside, and told he was barred, he was initially agitated.

Mr James said Haslam then asked if his bag could be retrieved from the bar. But when he was handed the bag he produced an axe.

Haslam began slashing away with the axe, in a clearly threatening manner, the court was told.

Two members of the public attempted to intervene on the manager’s behalf, said Mr James, but Haslam continued waving the axe around.

He told them: “I am going to f**k up your lives”, Mr James added.

The two men were able to restrain Haslam though, as the bar manager called the police, the court was told.

Once the axe had been taken away from Haslam, he went back to his bag and produced a craft knife but by then police arrived and he was arrested.

Haslam, of Canterbury Drive, Bury, admitted to threatening a person with a bladed article and breach of a suspended prison sentence order.

Thomas Worsfold, defending, said his client had been under some emotional strain at the time as he had just split with his partner.

Eyewitnesses recalled how Haslam was alternatively aggressive and in tears at the time of the incident, the court was told.

“He has indicated that he is sorry for what he did,” added Mr Worsfold.

Jailing Haslam, Judge Maurice Greene said the bar manager had described, in her victim impact statement, as being “completely terrified” that the defendant was going to attack her with the axe.

The judge said he accepted Haslam had suffered with depression and was remorseful for his actions but immediate custody was justified.
